What to include

  • Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) and VAT number if registered
  • Labour and materials as separate amounts — CIS comes off labour only
  • The CIS rate: 20% registered, 30% unregistered, 0% gross payment status
  • Reverse charge wording when the domestic reverse charge applies

Common questions

Is CIS deducted from materials?

No. The deduction applies to the labour part of the payment. Materials, plant hire and VAT are excluded, which is why the generator keeps them separate.

Who works out the CIS deduction?

The contractor paying you makes the deduction and pays it to HMRC. Showing it on your invoice helps you agree the net amount — always confirm the rate the contractor verified with HMRC.

Do I add VAT under the reverse charge?

If the domestic reverse charge applies, show the VAT rate and amount but leave it out of the total; your customer accounts for it. Turn on "Reverse charge" in the tax settings.
