There is no national sales tax in the US. Each state sets its own rules and rate, and many counties and cities add their own on top. Use the combined rate for the place where the work is done.
Labor and materials
States treat contractors differently. In some, materials are taxable but labor is not. In others, repair or installation labor is taxable too. And in many, a contractor improving real property pays tax when buying the materials and charges the customer no sales tax at all. Turn on “Split labor & materials” to see the difference.

Common questions
Do contractors charge sales tax on labor?
It depends on the state and the type of work. Some states tax labor on repairs or installation, many tax only the materials, and in some the contractor pays tax when buying materials instead. Check your state department of revenue.
What rate should I use?
Use the combined rate where the work happens: the state rate plus any county and city rates. Your state department of revenue publishes the current rates.
Which states have no sales tax?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska has none at state level, but many local areas charge their own.
